Not all the plugins or viewers listed below are required in every Web book, but they are used extensively throughout the World Wide Web. You may install them now, but it's probably best to return here when you encounter a need.

Helpful Books

The following books are among the best available on the subject of the Internet and Web. You may order them both directly by clicking on their titles.

Learning the Internet  by Joyce Arnston, Kathy Berkemeyer, Kenn Halliwell, and Thomas Neuberger. This book covers both Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer, as well as search engines, file transfer protocol (FTP), and email. It contains 35 self-paced exercises and appendices on Netiquette, Viruses, and Internet History. It also comes with a CD that plays simulations of the Web sites used in the exercises.

Internet and World Wide Web Simplified (2nd Edition)  by Paul Whitehead and Ruth Maran. This book uses lots of graphical illustrations to introduce the Internet and the World Wide Web and has separate chapters on email, mailing lists, newsgroups, chat, FTP, and multi-player games. The chapter on the Web covers browsers, plug-in, Web pages, searching, and Web TV. There's also a directory of interesting Web sites.
