** Plan Ahead for Y2001 PT3 Grants **
Last issue we promised to look into President Clinton's
announcement of $128 million in grants to train teachers in
how to use technology in the classroom. If your school
didn't get one of this year's coveted federal tech grants,
here's the good news:
FutureU called Washington to get the scoop on NEXT year's
funding opportunities and it seems October is the month when
Congress will say yea or nay to more dollars for Preparing
Tomorrow's Teachers to Use Technology (PT3). So, mark your
calendar to check the government Web site as soon as autumn
leaves start to fall. The address is:
http://www.ed.gov/teachtech/ That's the place to look
for grant application information, as well as a listing of
this year's grantees. Or, you may call the Department of
Education at 202-502-7788. Good luck!
PT3 is under attack at the moment by budget-cutters, so you
may also want to drop a note to your Congress person
applauding the program. Check out the PT3 site mentioned
above and you'll find all the evidence you need to
substantiate your support.

** Determining the Cost of Online Courses **
Author Brian Morgan of Marshall University has created an
automated form to help calculate the true costs of
delivering online courses. The tool generates a set of
spreadsheets from answers you supply to key questions about
online course delivery.
"Even though there are dozens of methods of delivering
courses through distance education, the offering of online
courses through the World Wide Web has existed for less than
a decade. Because of this recent evolution, many
institutions may not realize the full impact of the cost of
online education," says Morgan.
FutureU tested the tool and found it to be quite helpful in
generating numbers for discussion and analysis. It's
designed for a campus-wide application, but a little
creativity could make it work for even a single course.
